ASHLAND, Ore. -- Thursday was a big day for a construction project at Southern Oregon University. The Thalden Pavilion Project is nearing completion. Construction workers added a 40-foot piece of timber to the project Thursday morning.

Christopher Brown, Architect with Arkitek: Design & Architecture, designed the project. He said he was inspired by Southern Oregon's natural resources.

"The locally sourced timber is milled in Eagle Point and it's being a big part of exemplifying the idea of working within our local watershed, our communities and the farm to table movement," Brown said.

Joe Mosley, Director of Community and Media Relations for SOU, said the project was fully funded from a donation by Ashland residents Barry and Kathryn Thalden.

"They've done amazing things in this community since they came here six years ago," Mosley said.

When the project is complete, it'll be used as an outdoor classroom, a play area for kids, and a stage for theatre and music.

"Some of the main influences we had here were an inspiration from the pinwheel form, the Nautilus shell found in nature, so almost the spiral, each of these wings sort of folding inside of each other and nesting," Brown said.

The project should be completed in April. That's when there will be a dedication ceremony to the community on Earth Day, which Brown said was the day he wanted.
