RUCH, Ore. -- John and Miriam McKee were newlyweds when they left Missouri and traveled by wagon train to the Rogue Valley in 1853.

Under the seat of their wagon, probably in a clay jar, Miriam brought a yellow English rose from her parents' home and planted it at the couples' homestead near present-day Ruch.

Evelyn Williams is one of the keeper's of the McKee's family history, and she says that the rose could be a symbol of Miriam's pioneer spirit.
