Smoke Affects Oregon Shakespeare Festival Performances

ASHLAND, Ore. -- On Sunday, OSF had to cancel the Count of Monte Cristo because of  poor air quality. So far, administrators have had to cancel three full shows this year, and one show was canceled at intermission in the outdoor Elizabethan Theatre.

Every night with a scheduled performance, managers take a look at the air quality, in part thanks to a temporary air quality station put in a few weeks ago from the U.S. Forrest Service.

"It's a very carefully measured decision and we have their well fare as well as the well fare of the performers  as well as our theatre staff at the top of mind when we are making that decision. And as painful as it is to cancel a show, health always comes first," says Eddie Wallace, OSF Membership and Sales Manager.

The theatre tries to make a call on the status of a show by about 6:30 p.m. with the shows scheduled to start at 8 p.m., but they say quick changes in air quality can force a cancellation to come down later.

If they are able to cancel the show early on, there are some limited options to get people into some of the indoor shows. But the Elizabethan is also the largest theatre, seating up to 1,200 people per night and administrators do their best to accommodate changes.

If a show is canceled, ticket holders can either exchange their ticket, get a refund, or donate the price of the ticket back to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. To figure out what works best for each person, they must contact the box office within 7 days of the show's cancellation.
