Athletics Affected by Smoke Cause Medford School District Logistical Nightmare

Not only does the Medford School District lose thousands of dollars each time a home football game is moved away from Spiegelberg Stadium, they're tasked with making other arrangements last second.

MEDFORD -- For every home football game for North Medford or South Medford that is moved away from Spiegelberg Stadium due to smoke and unsafe air quality, the Medford School District says it loses anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000.

This includes the lost revenue the school would generate with the cost of tickets, merchandise and concessions. It also includes the extra costs the District incurs when having to move a home game like they did for North Medford last Friday night.

"You're now going to have to pay transportation costs, and for a football game, that's going to be at least two buses," MSD Activities Director Amy Tiger said, "You have some auxilary transportation for coaches and cheerleaders as well."

Given the fact the District's budget outlines that it expects $115,000 in revenue from North Medford and South Medford home football and basketball games, losing even just one game costs them about five percent of that figure. Still, MSD Communications Specialist Natalie Hurd says this is just a drop in the bucket of the District's $140 million annual budget.

MSD will pick up the cost of losing that revenue and make sure sports still go on in the District. The biggest cost, the District says, is to the students and community, who plan on coming together for football games on Friday nights.

"There's lost opportunities. There was a lost opportunity for the community to see the North Medford football team last Friday night," Tiger said, "It was a lost opportunity to see the band march, for the cheerleaders to perform in front of our community. It's a community event, so it's a loss for everybody."

North Medford has another home football game scheduled for this coming Friday, September 14. If the poor air quality remains, the cost both emotionally for the community, and financially for the school District, will double.
