FireWatch: Fire crews on the Cougar Peak Fire increase containment to 6 percent

Firefighters continue to make progress on the Cougar Peak fire in Lake county as resources are focused on the eastern and southern edges of the fire.

LAKEVIEW, Calif. — Firefighters are continuing to make progress on lining the 230-mile perimeter of the Cougar Peak Fire northwest of Lakeview. Crews are focusing on building and reinforcing containment lines on the eastern and southern edges of the fire.

The flames of the fire continue to spread, now covering 86,282 acres. Containment has increased to 6 percent — up from zero percent reported yesterday.

An increase in winds is expected over the next few days and fire officials anticipate the containment lines will be tested by the flames. The southwest and northern perimeter of the fire is prepped for burn out operations — weather permitting — and will be conducted in areas where indirect lines were previously constructed.

Nearly the entire east side of the fire has direct containment lines in place as the heavy equipment group works to build contingency lines on the northwest edges of the Cougar Peak fire.

A level 3 evacuation order is in place north of Lakeview and south of Paisley as well as level 1 and 2 evacuation warnings.
