KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A Bonanza woman has been arrested and charged with Manslaughter for allegedly causing the death of her week-old child, according to a statement from the Klamath County District Attorney's Office.

27-year-old Ashley Grace Irwin came to the attention of the Klamath Department of Human Services (DHS) in April of 2018 when her youngest child, a "sick week-old infant" showed up at Sky Lakes Medical Center for an apparent cardiac arrest. Although medical staff tried to life flight the child to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, the baby died during treatment.

At that point, Klamath DHS took the rest of Irwin's children into protective custody immediately.

"The Oregon State Police were alerted and Detective Patrick Irish took this case under his wing with the assistance of Detective Thomas Andreazzi," DA Eve Costello said.

The detectives interviewed witnesses and looked into medical documentation to prove the "causative nature" of the baby's death, the DA's Office said. They also found evidence relating to alleged mistreatment of Irwin's other children.

"Ms. Ashley Grace Irwin and her significant other, Douglas Dale Johnston, fled the area almost immediately," Costello said.

Costello's office issued a secret indictment for Irwin on April 1. Detective Irish tracked Irwin to Baker City, Oregon, and officers took her into custody on April 16 — returning her to Klamath County in order to face charges.

Meanwhile, Oregon State Police continue to look for Johnston.

"As Klamath County District Attorney, I commend Detective Irish's dedication to this matter. His continued efforts along with those of Detective Andreazzi show admirable dedication to bringing justice for these children," Costello said.

According to court documents, Irwin was arraigned on Friday and has been charged with Manslaughter in the First Degree and Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree — both felonies — as well as three counts of Criminal Mistreatment in the Second Degree relating to Irwin's older children. Her bail has been set at $500,000.
