MEDFORD, Ore. —  The Medford Police Department on Wednesday identified a man found dead on the Bear Creek Greenway near Railroad Park last week. Detectives have been investigating the case as an apparent homicide.

An autopsy on the body was completed on Tuesday, MPD said. The manner of death was ruled as a homicide, with the cause of death described as "homicidal violence."

"Details of the exact cause of death are not being disclosed at this time, to maintain the integrity of the investigation," the agency said.

The victim was identified as 46-year-old Aaron Michael Mather. His next of kin have been notified.

Medford Police said that Mather was "well known" to police officers. He was homeless, and tended to camp in the area where his body was located.

Officers originally responded around 10:15 a.m. on Friday to a report of a body found in the area north of Railroad Park. The officers confirmed that there was a body, located about 75 yards off the bike path between the path and Bear Creek.

"Based on the circumstances of the scene, the case is being treated as a homicide," MPD said in a brief statement at the time.

Medford Police detectives were assisted at the scene by the Oregon State Police Crime Lab and the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office.

At the end of February, Medford Police launched an investigation after a homeless man's body was discovered about 150 yards north of Railroad Park, dead from a gunshot wound. Police later arrested a 17-year-old suspect, who was accused of shooting the man during an argument.

Anyone with information on this murder investigation is asked to call 541-770-4783, reference case number 21-4424.
