MEDFORD, Ore. -- The Medford School District says it is on track to open new classrooms and put some major upgrades in place at Griffin Elementary School. Students at the school got a first hand look at some of the classrooms they'll be occupying the following year.

The main construction on campus includes the addition of four new classrooms for second grade students. The district is investing $2 million into the classrooms while $1.5 million will go toward seismic upgrades. Griffin Creek is one of five Medford schools to receive seismic upgrades  through a state funded program.

“Our school was at capacity,” said Principal Louis Dix. “The new classrooms will benefit students and staff immensely. It will create an exceptional learning environment.”

Students will also notice new walkways, asphalt, and parking for staff. The school's field is also a big undertaking after staff say the field has been deteriorating and devoid of grass. Staff say the field has become a safety issue. An irrigation overhaul now connects the school to the city’s water supply as opposed to irrigation water, which was inconsistent, drying the fields.

The upgrades are expected to be complete by the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
