ASHLAND, Ore. -- The lack of snow didn't stop anyone from heading up to Mt. Ashland for fun in the snow Saturday. Mt. Ashland Ski Area opened its Sonnet Terrain Park this weekend. General Manager Hiram Towle said employees were out setting up the terrain park until 3AM, all so the community could get out and have fun in the snow.

No one is quite sure when the mountain will get enough snow to officially open.

“Mother Nature only knows the answer to that question," Towle said.

Until then, skiers, snowboarders and sledders of all ages have the Sonnet Terrain Park.

"We came up with this idea two days ago. It wasn't a whole lot of time to market or plan but we didn't care. We just wanted to show we're committed to the community and if they want snow, we're going to give it to them," Towle added.

For snowboarders Brian Jimenez and Enzie Schow, the Sonnet Terrain Park is just what they needed to back into it.

"I’m so pumped to have a terrain park before we even opened. It's just really fun to knock the rust off the rails and the body and just get back on the snow and the steel," Jimenez added.

"Yeah, it's incredible. We have a great turn out. A ton of kids out here learning, progressing and it's the best way to break in the season. Everyone gets nice and warmed up," Schow added.

For Schow, the best part is seeing everyone come together to have a little bit of snow fun.

"It's the best feeling. You can see someone you have no idea who they are but you guys share the common interest. It’s a really easy, quick connection. Everyone's smiling, laughing,” Schow said.

The Sonnet Terrain Park is open Sunday, December 24th, from 9-4PM.
It is free for pass holders and $10 for everyone else.
