MEDFORD, Ore. — A brand new sports and events center at Howard Memorial Sports Park will bear the Rogue Credit Union name upon its completion, City of Medford officials revealed on Tuesday.

Proposed early this year, the 160,000 square-foot complex received its approval from Medford voters in May when two measures expanding transient lodging taxes passed — both part of the City's plan to fund the project.

Now, the City of Medford says that Rogue Credit Union has accepted a $2.145 million offer for naming rights on the facility, which will be dubbed the “Rogue Credit Union Community Complex” when it opens in 2023.

“We’ve been discussing and dreaming about partnership possibilities with Rogue Credit Union involving a new aquatics facility in Medford for many years,” said City Manager Brian Sjothun. “This agreement is a perfect fit, and we’re excited about the positive impact the Rogue Credit Union Community Complex will have on Medford for generations.”

Medford City Council is expected to approve the agreement on November 5, establishing a 10-year agreement with Rogue Credit Union. The City says that this is the second-largest municipal parks and recreation naming rights deal in Oregon history, second only to Providence Park in downtown Portland.

The more than $2 million investment buys RCU exclusive signage both inside and outside of the building, Medford said — on a branded kiosk, a public ATM, and a customized splash pad featuring the RCU "Rogue Rangers" characters. RCU will also be able to take over the complex twice a year for "members-only days" and other company events.

"We are thrilled to partner on this project that will bring family fun to Southern Oregon," Rogue Credit Union President and CEO Gene Pelham said. "We are honored to invest in this facility and the economic benefits it will bring to our region."

The City of Medford said that the proceeds will go toward annual maintenance costs at the facility, in addition to a free water safety class offered to each fourth grader within the Medford city limits every year.

Construction of the facility alone is expected to cost at least $60 million, including a 90,000 square-foot multi-purpose event center and a 42,000 square-foot aquatics center, in addition to restrooms, offices, and other areas. The aquatics area will feature a recreation pool, a competitive pool, two water slides, and a splash pad.

“Rogue Credit Union has been a major sponsor of City recreation programs for many years, and this agreement takes the partnership to the highest level,” Parks and Recreation Director Rich Rosenthal said. “The most impactful benefit for citizens is the funding for drown-prevention classes for Medford kids at a state-of-the-art indoor aquatics facility."
