ASHLAND, Ore. -- It's a big night for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The Allen Elizabethan Theatre, the festival's flagship outdoor theatre, opened to audiences Friday night.

The festival is also celebrating the opening of its Green shows Friday night.

Acting Executive Director Paul Christy said the opening outdoor weekend is 90 percent sold out. Audiences can see Macbeth Friday at 8 p.m., Alice in Wonderland Saturday and All's Well That End's Well Sunday.

Christy said the festival is already thinking ahead to what this year's fire season might bring.

"We are prepared for anything this Summer," Christy said.

He said he hopes to have as many performances under the stars as possible this year, but the festival does have a game plan if it's another smoky Summer.

"At the first hint of smoke or dangerous conditions we are prepared to move to the Mountain Avenue Theatre just down the street," Christy said.

This year, the festival is working on reducing out carbon footprint by focusing on local performers. During the entire month of August, all of the acts on the Green Show stage will be local. It's a way to utilize acts that don't have to travel far distances to make it to the festival. In essence, making the green shows even greener.

New this year, Christy said the festival is offering matinee shows during the month of August for the first time.

"Families, those who want to get out early can see Alice in Wonderland in the middle of the afternoon, that'll be a first for us and we're excited about offering that," Christy said.
