OSF returns to the outdoor stage after smoke fears subside

Starting August 27, Oregon Shakespeare Festival shows will return to the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.

ASHLAND, Ore. — Several of this season's Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) shows will be returning to the outdoor stage after they were moved indoors in anticipation of wildfire-affected air quality.

The Allen Elizabethan Theatre reopens on Tuesday, August 27 for evening productions of Macbeth, Alice in Wonderland, and All's Well That Ends Well until the end of the 2019 outdoor season on October 13.

After a 2018 outdoor season that was plagued by poor air quality from wildfire smoke, OSF stood prepared — making sure that all Elizabethan shows could be moved indoors to the Mountain Avenue Theatre at Ashland High School. When smoke from the Milepost 97 fire began filling the valley at the end of July, the company did precisely that.

Ultimately, OSF decided to extend the move through Sunday, August 25 in an attempt to endure the height of smoke season.

Now that the shows are moving back, all tickets labeled for the Mountain Avenue Theatre between August 27 and September 8 will function as a ticket to the Allen Elizabethan Theatre, the company said.

"Ticket holders can proceed to the Allen Elizabethan Theatre with their current ticket, and an usher will help you find your reserved seat," OSF said in a statement.

Despite a fortunate run of smoke-free days (knock on wood), OSF says that it will continue to monitor air quality in the Rogue Valley on a daily basis in case that should change.

"When there are wildfires in the area, should unhealthy air-quality measurements lead to a decision to cancel the show, OSF will email ticket holders as soon as that decision is made on the day of the show," the company said.

That said, OSF does not plan to reschedule or move any further shows. Ticket holders for any canceled shows will have a chance to move that ticket to another performance, receive a voucher for any OSF show in the 2020 season, donate the ticket, or receive a refund.

OSF recommends that ticket holders check its website regularly, especially on the day of performances they are scheduled to attend. Patrons and ticket holders can also text SHOWSTATUS to 41411 after noon on the day of the show for an update on that evening's performance.

Meanwhile, OSF is again offering $10 food drive tickets for a run of shows beginning next week. The proceeds will benefit ACCESS and the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. All patrons have to do is bring at least one non-perishable food item for each $10 ticket purchased, or make a cash donation.

“At the food bank, we see the impact of replacing a person’s worry about feeding their family, with nutritious food for their plates, and at OSF we witness the nourishing impact of the communal experience that is live theatre,” said Julie Cortez, OSF multimedia communications manager and Ashland Emergency Food Bank board member. “Community Food Drives are some of my favorite times of the year, as we partner to recognize two essential needs of the human experience: access to food and to art.”

Community Food Drive tickets will be available starting at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the show, at the OSF Box Office (15 S. Pioneer St., Ashland) windows only, on a first-come, first-served basis. Bins will be provided for food and/or cash donations in the Box Office lobby.
