GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A man currently in critical condition at Three Rivers Medical Center rushed officers with an object that investigators later identified as a garden tool, according to the latest from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.

Officers responded to the 1400-block of Wineteer Lane just after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning after someone reported finding a man inside of a house under construction. When a construction worker challenged the man, they got into a struggle.

The man, later identified as 39-year-old Jonny James, ran away and tried to steal a truck parked nearby, but was apparently unable to get it started — causing him to again run away from the area.

"Within minutes, officers received information the man was inside a nearby backyard and making statements to harm himself while trying to stab himself with gardening tool," GPDPS said.

Officers approached the man and tried to de-escalate the situation, the agency said, working to calm James down. Minutes later, he rushed toward the officers with a gardening tool in his hand.

One of the GPDPS officer fired less-lethal "bean bag" rounds at James, but three other officers fired their handguns, GPDPS said.

Officers gave James first aid at the scene before he was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in critical condition.

"No officers were injured during the incident," GPDPS said. "The weapon held by the man appeared to be a weeder tool, which is similar to a large flat head screwdriver."

The Josephine County Major Crimes team is investigating the shooting, with Oregon State Police as the lead agency.
