PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Health Authority is reporting 4,700 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 32 new deaths related to COVID-19 over the weekend.

Oregon reported 2,142 confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases on Sept. 10, 1,513 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases on Sept. 11, and 1,045 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases on September 12. This new count brings the state total of cases to 301,504 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 32 new COVID-19 related deaths raised the death toll in Oregon to 3,446, according to OHA. The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 across Oregon is 1,075, which is 11 fewer than yesterday. There are 274 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, which is nine fewer than yesterday. The total number of patients in hospital beds may fluctuate between report times.

Listed below is the number of new reported COVID-19 cases for southern Oregon over the weekend:

  • Jackson County - 305 new cases
  • Josephine County - 170 new cases
  • Klamath County - 41 new cases
  • Curry County - 22 new cases
  • Lake County - 22 new cases

With the weekend cases, Jackson County Public Health noted that the county has surpassed 20,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

"Jackson County reported its first COVID-19 case the week of March 8, 2020; from there, it took 59 weeks to reach 10,000 COVID-19 cases in Jackson County; and only 21 weeks to reach 20,000 COVID-19 cases," health officials said.

Jackson County also reported five new deaths attributed to COVID-19, bringing the total to 237 since the beginning of the pandemic. The youngest of these fatalities was a 60-year-old man who died last Thursday at Providence Medford Medical Center. All of them had underlying conditions.

Meanwhile, neighboring Josephine County reported four new deaths from COVID-19. The youngest was a 54-year-old woman who died Sunday at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass. She had not been vaccinated against COVID-19. Only one of the four new fatalities, an 83-year-old woman, had received the vaccine. All had underlying conditions.

Josephine County has had a total of 170 deaths related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Of those deaths, 148 were unvaccinated, according to public health officials.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Oregon's Region 5, which consists of Jackson and Josephine counties, have been only declined slightly from the recent peak. As of Monday morning there were still 183 patients with COVID-19 in the region, 54 of those patients in intensive care. The OHA only lists a total of 57 staffed ICU beds in Region 5.
