2018 High School Football Preview: Crater Comets

With QB Trever Davis returning for a third season, Gavin Acrey in the backfield, and Noah Cline on the outside, the Comets could be very dangerous in 2018.

CENTRAL POINT -- Despite losing star running back and safety, Cade Weaver, the Crater Comets are in good position to make a playoff run in 2018 thanks to returners at every key offensive skill position.

Quarterback Trever Davis is back for this third season as a starter, still just a junior while running back Gavin Acrey, fullback Tony Flores, and receiver Noah Cline are all entering their final seasons in the black and orange.

"We do have a couple seniors coming back and they'll help a lot," Davis said, "Especially on defense, we'll have Logan [Lowder] as our linebacker. Tony [Flores] is in our backfield too with Gavin, so it's just hard to stop."

"Cade, obviously, is tough to replace," head coach Randy Waite said, "But we have some guys that are working hard to get that spot, so it'll be similar to last year, but we've got a lot of returners, so that's nice."

Davis believes his progression will continue this year thanks to another year of maturity, which will lead to more patience, and ultimately, better production.

"Taking the next step for me is being able to sit in the pocket a little longer and throw downfield, be more comfortable with my lineman up front and believe in them," Davis said.

He might be able to hang in the pocket longer, but Waite has ideas for how to make Davis and even bigger threat. Now fully healthy, Davis should be able to impact the ground game as well.

"I think you'll see something a little bit different," Waite said, "He'll run a little bit more than he did in the past."

A healthy Davis and seniors at key positions should lead to a step in the right direction for Crater.
