EUGENE, Ore. — Former Southern Oregon University runner Eric Avila finished in seventh place in the men's 1500-meter Olympic Trials finals, posting a time of 3:38.20.
The former Raider led the race for the first lap before sinking to the back of the pack. He used a strong final leg to push up to seventh but was not in the top three needed to qualify for the Olympics.
Cole Hocker, a runner at the University of Oregon, won the race in 3:35.28, narrowly edging out 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Centrowitz who finished just six one-hundredths of a second behind the Duck. Yared Nuguse, a runner from the University of Notre Dame, rounded out the top three finishers.
