Beavers awarded Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award

The Oregon State Women's Basketball team was awarded the Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award on Thursday.

CORVALLIS, Ore--- The Oregon State Women's Basketball team was awarded the Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award on Thursday. This marks the women's team is Oregon State's second win since 2004 (Mitch Canham).

Oregon State's win is a direct result of how the Beavers treated the Ducks in Corvallis on the same day that former Laker legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash.

On January 26, 2020, The Beavers and Ducks were facing each other for the third installment of the 2020 Civil War rivalry. On that morning, the world lost Kobe Bryant, along with his daughter and seven others. Oregon's Sabrina Ionescu lost a very close friend in Bryant.

With about an hour left to tip-off at Gill Coliseum, Oregon State's Madison Washington and Aleah Goodman stopped warming-up and walked to the other half of the court. Moments later, both teams were linked hand-in-hand at center court. After several emotional moments, a round of applause could be heard. It came from the Oregon State students, which were the only fans allowed in the arena to that point in time.

The Beavers act to put down a rivalry and comfort fellow athletes in a time of extreme pain just goes to show what sports can help people do.

The Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award is given by members of the Pac-12 Student-Athlete Advisory Council. It is based on good sportsmanship and ethical behavior in participation of intercollegiate athletics, as well as a demonstration of good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Oregon State had another nominee for the award. The Oregon State Pep Band learned the Utah fight song after it learned that Utah would not be able to attend the Pac-12 Men's Tournament in Las Vegas due to concerns over the coronavirus. The band learned and performed the song in less than a day. The song was played a number of times during Oregon State's competition with Utah.
