Beavers tournament run comes to a close in the Elite Eight

A historic tournament run comes up short of the Final Four as the Oregon State men's basketball team's second-half surge isn't enough against 2-seed Houston, losing 67-61.

INDIANAPOLIS — Oregon State's men's basketball team's Cinderella story falls just short of a glass slipper, as the Beavers couldn't overcome a 17-point halftime deficit against the University of Houston in the Elite Eight. The 12-seed Beavers fell to the 2-seed in the Midwest, 67-61 on Monday.

The Cougars defense was suffocating in the first half, limiting Oregon State to a mere 17 points and making the Beavers leading scorer Ethan Thompson a non-factor for the majority of the game. OSU did not rollover. They outscored Houston 44 to 33 in the second half, their comeback falling just short of punching their ticket to the Final Four.

Junior Maurice Calloo led the scoring for the beavers with 13 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Thompson was 3-for-12 from the floor but went 5-for-8 from the charity stripe to end the game with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Houston's Marcus Sasser was dominant from three, going 5-for-13 from beyond the arc and making all but one of his six free throws to end the contest with a game-high 20 points. The Cougars advanced to their first Final Four since 1984 and will play the South Region's 1-seed Baylor for a chance to play in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game.
