Borich lifts Raiders over Owls with last second shot

ASHLAND, Ore--- The final two possessions may have taken some years off your age if you were at the Lithia Motors Pavillion, Wednesday night.

The Raiders trailed for the entire game if you don't count the last 5.3 seconds. However, the final second is the most important one.

With the 15th ranked Raiders down by one, senior guard Aaron Borich delivered a bank shot that will be remembered for a long time. The basket put the Raiders up, 77-76.

With just five seconds left, Mitchell Fink pushed the ball up the floor so fast that two Raider defenders tripped on one another. Fink was all alone. As the remaining three defenders sank on Fink, he dumped the ball off to Matt Van Trussell. The final shot was blocked by Tate Hoffman. The Raiders defeated the #5 Owls, 77-76.

"I could not get off of the guys that fell down. I just caught the end of the block. I was just looking at the two down. I was like "Oh, we are in big trouble here." said Southern Oregon head coach Brian McDermott.

Borich ended up celebrating in the student section.

Oregon Tech dominated the majority of the contest. The Owls started on a 14-0 run and led the Raiders by 17 at one point during the 2nd half.

The Raiders slowly chipped away at the lead, starting at about 10 minutes left in the game.

The way the Raiders defended Oregon Tech's star guard Mitchell Fink had a lot to do with the victory.

"We guarded the pick and roll differently than we have ever guarded it. One of the reasons we did that was one of my assistants. He worked on me all week. We watched a lot of film and decided to go with the way that we did it. It was golden. It really worked well." said McDermott.

The Raiders had Fink frustrated most of the night. Fink finished with 14 points. Seven of those points came from free-throws. Fink finished the night 3-17 from the filed.

One huge positive that came for the Owls was senior guard Seth Erikson, who had a career night. Erikson dropped six three-pointers and finished with 36 points. Early in the 2nd half, Erikson seemed impossible to guard.

The Raiders were led by Aaron Borich and Tate Hoffman, who both finished with 16 points.

Teron Bradford added 14 for the Raiders.

Up next, the Raiders will take on Corban at the Lithia Motors Pavillion, on Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The Owls will try to rebound against Northwest Christian in Klamath Falls. That game will be played on Friday, at 7:30 p.m. Scores from both games will be on NewsWatch 12's Roundball Wrap, at 11:15 p.m.
