Governor Brown mulls possible sports cancellations through September

MEDFORD, Ore--- Oregon Governor Kate Brown did not officially cancel anything but mulled the idea of sporting events being canceled through September of 2020, in a press conference on Thursday.

"Large gatherings including live sporting events with audiences, concerts, festivals, and conventions will not be able to return until we have a reliable treatment or prevention like a vaccine," said Brown. "The Oregon Health Authority is advising that any large gathering at least through September, should be either canceled or significantly modified."

What this could mean for sports in Southern Oregon is unknown. The announcement left some uncertainty among the OSAA and local football coaches that look to start their seasons in late August.

"Well you know we are only two and a half months into this. She is making a statement about something that is three and a half months away," said North Medford Football head coach Steve Turner. "I would be open to anything that lets our kids play and participate. It is such a huge, that is the thing. I can't see opening schools in September but saying "Okay you can't have any extracurriculars."

"I heard phrases like "large gatherings" and stuff like that, but you know... what's a large gathering? Certainly, if we are talking about the Timbers or the Blazers or Oregon, Oregon State Football, that is a large gathering. Everybody knows that. But how far down does that go?" said OSAA Executive Director Peter Weber.

Weber did say that the OSAA is currently working up plans to have fall sports seasons in a modified way. The details of those plans are still being worked out.

Turner says the season is extremely important to all of the athletes, but especially the ones that rely on sports to keep them motivated to attend school.

"Without that carrot dangling in front of them, you are going to find a lot of kids just blow everything off and say "I am going to work."

Only time will tell if sporting events are canceled or if our high school sports will go on without fans.

"I don't know. Who knows what is going to happen? It is three and a half months until the start of September. So, a lot is going to change. Who knows?" said Turner. "Maybe this epidemic will increase. Maybe it will go away and there is obviously something in-between where we are going to be at."

Through the uncertainty, NewsWatch 12 Sports will continue to dig into the situation and bring you the very latest details as they emerge.
