NAIA Opening Round set: Raiders, Owls both one-seeds in their brackets

The Road to Columbus is set and both the Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech softball teams are the top-seeded teams in their respective brackets.

MEDFORD, Ore. — The NAIA postseason is officially upon us as the Opening Round brackets were revealed Tuesday afternoon, as 40 teams set their sights on Columbus, Georgia. Both the defending national champion Southern Oregon University Raiders and the recent Cascade Conference tournament champion Oregon Tech Owls are in as the one-seed in their respective brackets.

Both SOU and OIT had clinched automatic berths into the NAIA Opening Round so their Tuesday wasn't as tense as the team's receiving at-large bids. But they waited with anticipation on who they'd meet.

Southern Oregon was already set to host so no travel arrangements needed to be made, besides a 20-minute ride up I-5 to U.S. Cellular Park on game day. Waiting for them at the field on May 17 will be the University of Saint Katerine (13-19). The Firebirds punched their ticket into the Opening Round with an upset win over Simpson University in the Cal Pac Tournament. They'll face off on the diamond against the defending National Champions at 1:30 pm in Medford in their first-ever NAIA postseason appearance.

Oregon Tech has a much longer journey ahead of them. They're headed to the clear other side of the country. A trip to Waleska, Georgia is in store, though it will be worth it as the Owls earned the top seed in their bracket. Their Opening Round match-up will be against Cottey College (27-11) next Monday. The Comets are making their first NAIA postseason appearance after finishing second in the Association of Independent Institutions softball tournament, losing twice to Georgia Gwinett College.
