Oregon State Gets Scare, Survives Against Portland State

Oregon State got its first win of the year over Portland State, but it had to work harder than expected to get it.

CORVALLIS -- It didn't come as easily as expected, but the Oregon State Beavers (1-1) were able to outlast the Portland State Vikings (0-2) 35-32 after PSU missed a 46-yard game-tying field goal in the game's closing seconds.

It wasn't pretty, but the Beaver defense made stops when it needed to and did just enough to get the team its first win of the season, pushing it one step closer to bowl eligibility, something the team hasn't had in four years.

The Oregon State running game was kept unusually quiet. Star running back Ryan Nall was held to fewer than four yards per carry. The unit as a whole picked up just 154 yards on 32 carries.

Quarterback Jake Luton picked up the slack, though, going 18-for-25 for 285 yards and one touchdown to go with one interception.
It looked as though the Beavers were going to cruise until two late Portland State touchdowns put Oregon State behind. Luton led the offense back, though, and with about a minute remaining in the game, found true freshman Isaiah Hodgins from 17 yards out to put the Beavers back in front.

Thanks to an inaccurate kick in the closing seconds, the Beavers held on.

Oregon State continues its quest to reach a bowl game as they host Big Ten foe Minnesota at 7 p.m. in Corvallis on Saturday, September 9.
