Raiders get second chance against Warner Pacific

After losing to the Knights by six to close out the regular season, the SOU women's basketball team will host them again on Tuesday to open up the Cascade Conference tournament.

ASHLAND, Ore. — Everyone could always use a second chance to make things right, but second chances in sports don't come around often. This Tuesday, though, is one of the times it does.

Southern Oregon University's women's basketball team gets a shot at redemption against Warner Pacific, who upset the Raiders on Senior Night with a strong fourth quarter. SOU will host the Knights to open up the Cascade Conference tournament on Tuesday. It's a rare opportunity that the Raiders are thankful for.

"It's definitely a unique experience to be able to come back and play them right away," redshirt sophomore Dominque Harding said after practice Monday. "I think that it lights a fire under us more especially because we lost at home on Senior Night. And then we just want to prove to our fans that that's not who we are and we want to prove to everyone that we want to make a run in playoffs and this is our season."

"Everyone's really excited, like, that's the dream," junior guard Syd'Nee Fryer said on Monday. "Usually if you lose to a team you want to [say] 'OK, let's play again, let's go back.' So we're all really excited, we all know what we can do better than what we did Saturday."

The points of emphasis at practice on Monday was intensity and mindset. Head Coach Alex Carlson brought up the Miracle on Ice and how Team USA came out with the idea in their head that they will be the aggressor, they will push the tempo of the game. It's the same kind of intensity he wants Tuesday night.

Before Saturday's loss, the Raiders were riding a three-game win streak and a four-game home win streak. When the teams take the court tomorrow night at Lithia Motors Pavilion at 7 pm, they'll try to restart both of those win streaks and advance in the tournament.

"[Tomorrow] we get to run it back at our house again so we know that this one... this one's going to be a good one," Fryer said.

The junior from Manteca, California also made a promise when it comes to her stat line and intensity on defense.

"I promise I'm for sure getting the ten steals tomorrow. So we'll see the first triple-double of my career tomorrow."

Only time will tell. Her first goal, of course, is getting the win and advancing in the tournament.
