Raiders take down Hope International, secure No. 1 seed in NAIA World Series

MEDFORD, Ore--- The top-ranked Raiders will officially have the chance to defend their 2019 National Title at the 2021 NAIA World Series in Columbus, Georgia.

Southern Oregon defeated No. 11 Hope International, 4-3, in a tightly contested NAIA Opening Round Championship game on Wednesday.

The ball game came down to a controversial moment in the top of the 7th. Southern Oregon was leading, 4-3. After a throwing error and an infield hit, Hope had a runner 2nd with one out. The runner at 2nd got trapped between 3rd and 2nd and looked to be tagged by Lauren Quirke off a ground ball. Then, Quirke threw to 2nd where the other runner was called safe. Though, the call was that Quirke had not tagged that first runner

Sandoval hit the following batter. The bases were loaded with one out.

The Raiders got the 2nd out by way of a popup from Nicole Wise.

Then, it was Sandoval vs Emily Puente. Puente had already hit a home run in the 4th.

Puente sent one on a rope straight past Sandoval but Hannah Shimek jumped to the sky and snatched it out of the air. The third out was earned as Shimek landed back on her feet.

"It was a lot but our team is really good at staying composed," said Shimek. "Gabby does a really good job of staying that way. We played Raider ball. Sometimes we do it the hard way and that is okay. But we get it done and we got it done. "

With the win, Southern Oregon advances to the NAIA World Series for the 4th consecutive time.

Gabby Sandoval earned the win with another complete game. Sandoval allowed three runs off seven hits. She only threw one strikeout. That was Sandoval's 29th win of the season.

"It was really hard for me to just stay calm," said Sandoval. "But that was the most important thing for me going through my head. Just one pitch at a time and don't let the situation get bigger than it really is."

Tayler Walker hit a home run in the second inning that gave the Raiders their first run. At the time, SOU was trailing, 2-0. That home run opened the bats up for Southern Oregon, and it worked its way back to the front.

Southern Oregon will be the No. 1 seed in the NAIA World Series. The Raiders will play the winner of 8-seed Milligan and 9-seed Bethany. Southern Oregon's game will be on Friday, May 28.
