MEDFORD, Ore. — Timely hits were hard to come by during the Cascade Conference tournament for No. 1 Southern Oregon University, but they haven't been an issue in the NAIA Opening Round. Clutch hitting paired with Gabby Sandoval's 118th win of her career gave the Raiders a 5-0 victory over No. 11 Hope International.

Timely hitting was the name of the game for Southern Oregon. Their first runs came in the third inning with two outs. After Allie Stines doubled with one away, Lauren Quirke and Riley Donovan drew two-out walks to load the bases for senior Tayler Walker. The Redding, California-native didn't waste much time. She drove a 1-0 pitch into the left-center gap, all the way to the wall, clearing the bases to give the Raiders a three-run lead.

SOU used the sixth inning to tack on some insurance runs using a little small ball to get the job done. Katrina Winterburn grinded through an impressive 11-pitch walk which Olivia Mackey followed up with a single plus an error to put both her and Winterburn in scoring position.

Avery Morehead-Hutsell hit a grounder to the infield so runners stayed put. Stines laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score Winterburn from third to make it a 4-0 game. Hannah Shimek hit a ground ball that had eyes as it skirted between third and short for an RBI single to score Mackey.

The HIU Royals weren't able to do anything against ace Gabby Sandoval. For the second day in a row, the product of Anaheim, California threw a complete-game shutout, spreading out four hits and a walk over seven innings of work. Sandoval put the trust in her defense, recording a single strikeout with the 20 other outs coming via a flyball or grounder.

Winning on Tuesday means the Raiders are a single victory away from returning to the NAIA World Series. They'll play the winner of the Morningside College-Hope International University game set for 4 pm on Tuesday. The deciding game in the Southern Oregon Bracket is scheduled for Wednesday at 11 am back out at US Cellular Community Park.
