MEDFORD, Ore. — Having an ace like Gabby Sandoval is a distinct advantage in the NAIA Tournament and that point proved itself on Monday as Southern Oregon University defeated the University of Saint Katherine 7-0 to stay in the winner's bracket.

Sandoval was lights out from start to finish, throwing a complete-game shutout, striking out 10 Firebirds batters while spreading out three hits and one walk over the course of the game. The closest Saint Katerine got to scoring was in the seventh when the Firebirds got a runner to third with two outs. Sandoval, however, got the next batter to hit a comebacker and ended the game.

For the Raiders batters, a bit of a slow start before the fifth inning. SOU loaded the bases in the second inning with one out before the next two hitters popped out and flied out.

Fast forward to the fifth inning where the top offense in the nation finally found their old selves at the plate. Avery Morehead-Hutsell got things started reaching second base on an error then got to third on a sacrifice bunt from catcher Allie Stines. Hannah Shimek wasted no time, roping a line drive into right field for an RBI single.

Lauren Quirke reached on another error by the Firebirds infield as Shimek rolled into third, bringing up Riley Donovan. The slugger hit a deep fly ball into center field, scoring Shimek from third for an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. They didn't stop there. Tayler Walker was hit by a pitch and then Rylan Austin took the first pitch she saw into right field, another RBI single as Quirke scored from third.

USK tried to stop the bleeding with a pitching change, swapping out sophomore pitcher Kailyn Bailey for another sophomore Juliette Guerra. Didn't work.

Guerra walked Katrina Winterburn then Olivia Mackey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Morehead-Hutsell reached first for the second time on another fielding error, which allowed Erika Marquez, who pinch ran for Austin, to score from third. Stines who was hitless to that point of the game, hit a laser into right field for a two-RBI double, plating the Raiders sixth and seventh runs of the inning and ultimately the game.

Sandoval cruised from there helping lead the Raiders to victory.

Southern Oregon will take on No. 11 Hope International at 11:00 am Tuesday morning. The game will be back out at US Cellular Community Park.
