ASHLAND, Ore--- The Southern Oregon basketball teams played in separate locations on Friday but came away with similar results. The Southern Oregon men beat Antelope Valley, 77-57. The SOU Women beat Pacific Union, 77-36.

The Southern Oregon men's team (3-5) took on Antelope Valley (5-5) at Lithia Motors Pavilion in Ashland.

The major difference in that game was shooting from three-point range. Southern Oregon hit on 12 of its 29 attempted shots from downtown. The Pioneers didn't hit a single shot from outside despite shooting 16 shots.

It was evident early on that Antelope Valley would prefer to shoot from inside the paint but what SOU's defense did was remarkable. According to the box score, 48 of Antelope Valley's 57 points came from inside the paint. The other nine points came from the free-throw line. That means the Raiders did not allow a single point outside of the paint.

For Southern Oregon, it was the big men that carried the heaviest load. Joe Juhala finished with 20 points after shooting 2-4 from downtown and 6-9 from the field. Josh Meyer was close behind with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Southern Oregon women (6-1) were away from the Pavilion on Friday. They traveled to take on Pacific Union (0-5).

It has been no secret in 2021 that SOU plays incredible defense. On Friday, SOU paired the "S.O.S. defense" with extremely efficient offensive play.

In fact, SOU had 12 different players score. No Raider scored in double-digits. However, once again, the difference that drove the Raiders is found in the turnover column. Southern Oregon forced 34 Pioneer turnovers while only committing 15. That allowed Southern Oregon to score 30 points off turnovers, compared to Pacific Union's 12.

Up next, the Southern Oregon men will see Simpson in Redding. That game will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The women will get William Jessup in Rocklin. That game is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
