Southern Oregon kept out of the endzone for first time since 2011

CALDWELL, Idaho — Coming off a big win at Autzen Stadium against Montana State-Northern, there were big hopes for the Southern Oregon University football team's game against the College of Idaho. Instead of continuing momentum gained from last week, the Raiders were stymied on offense for most of the day, losing 29-3 to the Yotes.

It was the first time since September 3, 2011, the Raiders were kept out of the endzone in a game. SOU lost 52-0 to Portland State in Portland.

For the most part, the defense looked like it was building off of last week's strong performance. Tasked with a third and goal on the opening drive, the Raiders front line held strong and limited the Yotes damage to just three points. The rest of the first half wasn't so kind as SOU couldn't get anything going on offense, forcing the defense back out onto the field.

The first half was beyond lopsided. SOU possessed the ball for a total of 6:24 out of the first 30 minutes and converted just four first downs. It led to the defense playing tired and giving up 23 points in the first half while the offense managed just 73 total yards.

Rested in the second half, the defense came out strong again and this time got some support from their offensive counterparts. The Raiders posted 132 yards of offense, picking up ten first downs. Time of possession was more than doubled as they held onto the ball for 15:24 of the second half, giving the defense time to recover. Due to that in part, the defense only allowed six points in the second half.

The lone point-scoring drive for SOU came in the third quarter. As the Raiders were building momentum, the team held its collective breath as starting quarterback Matt Struck hopped off the field, unable to put weight on his left leg. Trying to run out of the pocket, Struck was tackled around the ankles and rolled on the turf.

Kaeden Frazier, the redshirt freshman, took over and got the Raiders a first down on 4th and 4 but that was all SOU could do offensively. Cesar Ruiz nailed his first field goal attempt of the season with a 38-yard kick to put the Raiders on the board.

There should be plenty to tune-up ahead of the scheduled real home opener next Saturday.  The Raiders will prepare to host Carroll College at Raider Stadium for a 1 pm kickoff.
