OMAHA, Neb. -- Oregon State won its third straight elimination game Friday, upending previously unbeaten Mississippi State, 12 to 2.

The Beavers must beat the Bulldogs again on Saturday to eliminate them from the tournament and advance to the College World Series championship series. If they lose Saturday, their season comes to an end.

Oregon State exploded for five runs in the second inning to jump out to an early 6-1 lead. Michael Gretler, Nick Madrigal, and Adley Rutschmann all had run-scoring singles during the onslaught that lasted nearly 45 minutes.

From there, the Beavers cruised despite starter Bryce Fehmel being pulled after 3.2 innings and just 56 pitches. It's possible head coach, Pat Casey, pulled Fehmel to save him for relief duty in Saturday's game or to rest him for the potential of pitching in a championship series game.

Just three teams in the last 37 years have won the College World Series after losing their first game of the entire tournament. The 2006 Beavers are one of those three teams, having lost 11-1 to Miami (FL) in the first round, before winning four straight games on the way to the championship series. They came from behind again, losing Game 1 to North Carolina before winning two straight to win the first of two straight national championships.
