this week. emma says, "a beautiful day here at hawthorne park quickly turned disturbing as parents looked over and saw a man on the ground with needles nearby. medford police say they haven't been called to an overdose here since last year, however one parent tells me this is a reminder of a bigger problem that isn't going away." "there's a problem in here, this valley that needs to be addressed." jesse bartons took his 3-year-old daughter to the park today to play .. never imagining he'd be trying to save someone's life. until he saw a man laying on the ground by needles. "heart fibulating, couldn't breathe, blue as a fish, he was dead." his military training kicked in. he started doing cpr until police arrived. they gave the man nar-can.. and say he was semi-conscious when he was taken to the hospital. bartons says he's no hero and doesn't want praise.. but instead - a change. "i've lived here five to six years and the homeless and drug problem in the city is continuoulsy getting worse." he recognizes the city's work on revitalizing hawthorne park. but says he isn't shocked by today's overdose. "it's still a gateway area near the mission and the shelter where drug users congregate." another parent says things have gotten better. "i like the park a lot better it's a nicer environment for kids." a few years ago, she wouldn't have bothered to bring her little ones here. medford police say most of the overdoses they respond to happen at motels or homes. so today - is a rarity. in medford, emma balkenbush, newswatch 12.
